Life Insurance Isn’t About Death, It’s About Direction

Most people avoid talking about life insurance because it forces us to think about death. But consider this: if you had passed away yesterday, what would your family do today? If you already have a plan in place, that’s excellent! Life insurance likely plays a role, or you’re financially independent.

The reality is that most people don’t have a plan. My colleagues and I have met with thousands of clients, and very few have taken the steps needed to protect their families. Try asking ten friends or coworkers whether they have a plan and whether the people responsible for carrying it out actually know what to do. You’ll be surprised by the answers.

Many people say, “I have a will” or “I set up a trust.” That’s a good start, but it’s not enough. If you died yesterday, who knows how to access your life insurance? Who knows which company to call, what documents are required, or how to get funds for funeral costs and the next six months of living expenses?

Insurance companies are currently holding billions of dollars in unclaimed benefits simply because no one notified them that the policyholder passed away.

Here’s the obvious truth: once you’re gone, no one can ask you where the policies are, what steps to follow, or who to contact. If your plan isn’t clear and if the right person doesn’t have access to the information your plan might as well not exist. And that brings us back to the core issue: people avoid planning for many reasons, even though they know their family will be left in a difficult position without one.

So here’s my recommendation: have the hard conversation. Choose the person who will handle your affairs, and make sure they know exactly what to do. Put the details in writing. Share the documents. Make the plan real.

You’ll feel a genuine sense of peace knowing your family’s emotional and financial needs will be protected when they need it most.
